Successful test of DRDO (DRDO)

Delhi: Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has developed an indigenous air defense system. DRDO   (DRDO)    successfully conducted the first test of the Integrated Air Defense Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha on 23 August 2025 at around 12:30 pm. In this test, the missiles were flown behind the target and the missiles were successful in hitting their target in the air itself.

The Integrated Air Defense Weapon System is a multi-layered air defense system, which includes all indigenous quick reaction surface-to-air missiles. It has a total of three types of missiles. (QRSAM) Indigenous quick reaction surface-to-air missiles, advanced very short range air defense system (VSHORADS) missiles and a high-power laser-based directed energy weapon (DEW) are included in this defense system.

How strong is the Indian Air Defense System?

The Indian Air Defense System is one of the most advanced and robust systems in the world, capable of protecting against aerial threats such as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, fighter aircraft, drones and helicopters. This multi-layered system has been developed especially keeping in mind the threats emanating from neighboring countries like Pakistan and China. India’s air defense system is based on an integrated network of advanced radars, missile systems, and command-and-control centers, making it extremely effective.

S-400 Defense System
The Russian-made S-400 is one of India’s most important strengths. India signed a deal of Rs 35,000 crore for 5 squadrons in 2018. It can detect targets located at a distance of up to 600 kilometers and can strike at a distance of up to 400 kilometers. It can track 80 targets simultaneously and target 36 targets. It is capable of destroying ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, fighter aircraft. It is deployed in Punjab, Rajasthan and other border areas to prevent threats from Pakistan and China.

Akash Missile System
Indigenously developed by DRDO and Bharat Dynamics Limited, this system has a range of 25-45 km surface-to-air missiles. The range of Akash Next Generation has been extended to 70-80 km, which can track more than 60 targets up to 150 km. It is capable of destroying fighter aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. A battery can track 64 targets and attack 12.

Barak-8
The defense system jointly developed by India and Israel is capable of destroying targets up to an altitude of 16 km with a range of 70-100 km. It is effective in intercepting aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. It can fire 24 missiles at 16 targets simultaneously. It is used in the Navy and Army. It has been deployed at important bases like Bhatinda. The Ballistic Missile Defense System destroys ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere at an altitude of 80 km. Its range is up to 2000 km.
