Know when Justice BR Gavai will take oath(BR Gavai ) 

Delhi: President Draupadi Murmu has approved Justice BR Gavai  (BR Gavai )  as the 52nd Chief Justice of India. Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai (BR Gavai) will take oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025. Let us tell you that earlier the current Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna had recommended his name. The term of CJI Sanjeev Khanna is ending on May 13.

When will he retire?

BR Gavai will remain CJI for 6 months after assuming office and will retire in November 2025. Justice BR Gavai originally hails from Amravati district of Maharashtra. Notable decisions of Gavai’s career include the removal of Article 370 of Jammu and Kashmir and dividing it into two union territories.

Gavai will be the second Dalit CJI of the country
BR Gavai will be the second Chief Justice after Justice KG Balakrishna, who comes from the Dalit community, who served as Chief Justice from 2007 to 2010. 64-year-old Justice BR Gavai will retire in November 2025. His tenure as Chief Justice will be from 14 May 2025 to 24 November 2025.

Know about BR Gavai-
Born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, BR Gavai is the son of senior MP late Ramakrishna Gavai. Justice Gavai’s father Justice Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai was the founder of the Republican Party of India (RPI). He was active in Maharashtra politics and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amravati constituency in 1998 as a RPI candidate. He has also served as the governor of Bihar, Sikkim and Kerala between 2006 and 2011.

Justice Gavai joined the bar on March 16, 1985. He has served as government pleader and then public prosecutor for the Maharashtra government. He was appointed a judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003. He served there for 16 years before being elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Justice Gavai will serve as the Chief Justice for about six months before his retirement in November.
