Cyclonic Storm Michong: Cyclonic Storm Michong wreaked havoc non-stop in Chennai and its neighboring districts. 400 to 500 mm of rain fell since Sunday morning, flooding houses and destroying cars and bikes in the coastal metropolis. By the time Cyclone Michong started moving away from Chennai on Monday evening, several roads, including Anna Salai, had turned into waterways and a large number of parked cars were washed away from a gated colony in Pallikaranai, TOI reported. Due to incessant rain from 3 am to 6 pm on Monday, almost all roads, residential areas, railway stations, airports and bus terminals in Chennai were flowing like small rivers.
According to the report, all 17 subways of the city were submerged in water. Five deaths have been reported so far, including two employees trapped in a portable container office that slipped into a 50-foot gorge due to a landslide in Velachery. While three were rescued, two are yet to be traced by disaster relief agencies.
Cyclone Michong is likely to hit the Andhra coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, near Bapatla, before Tuesday afternoon as a severe cyclonic storm with winds of 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph. More than 100 trains canceled in Chennai
More than 100 trains were canceled from Chennai Central and Egmore stations. The Central station was cut off as incoming trains were short-terminated at Tiruvallur, Avadi and Beach railway stations. Some departures were operated from Tiruvallur and Katpadi but later all trains were cancelled.
Later in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin over phone and inquired about the cyclone and its after-effects. Apart from this, CM Stalin appointed eight ministers to visit flood-affected areas and ensure availability of essential commodities and called on people to cooperate in rescue and relief operations.
