10 crore notice sent to governor

SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday sent a legal notice to former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik for his alleged derogatory remarks against him, demanding a compensation of Rs 10 crore.

Malik is currently the Governor of Meghalaya. He had reportedly said a few days ago that Mehbooba Mufti had benefited from the Roshni scheme, aimed at giving ownership rights to the occupiers of state government land in lieu of fees. But Mehbooba’s lawyer Anil Sethi wrote in the legal notice, “No amount can compensate for the damage caused to my client’s reputation, yet my client has decided to sue you for compensation.”

In the notice, Malik has been asked to pay Rs 10 crore as compensation within 30 days or face legal action. It states that the compensation amount will not be used by Mehbooba for any personal benefit, but for the public good. Earlier on Wednesday, Mehbooba had asked Malik to withdraw her remarks. “She has the option to withdraw her remarks, failing which I will take recourse to law,” the PDP chief had tweeted two days ago.

It is noteworthy that Mehbooba shared a video in which Malik can be seen claiming that National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti got the plot under the Roshni scheme. The Roshni scheme was brought by the Farooq Abdullah government, whose objective was to give ownership rights to the people in possession of the state’s land in lieu of a fee. The amount received from this was to be used for setting up of hydro power projects in the state.
