Mumbai Rain Alert: Heavy Showers Disrupt Transport, 6-Foot Crocodile Rescued from Residential Area in Powai

Mumbai: Heavy rainfall continued to disrupt normal life across Mumbai and nearby regions on Wednesday, causing severe waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and affecting railway operations. Amid the downpour, a 6-foot-long crocodile was found beneath a parked vehicle in Mumbai’s Powai area, prompting a rescue operation by the Forest Department.

According to officials, the crocodile was spotted near Chand Shah Wali Dargah in Powai. It is believed that the reptile strayed from a nearby lake after continuous rainfall and rising water levels.

Forest Department Conducts Safe Rescue

Forest Department officials, along with wildlife rescue teams, safely rescued the crocodile. After a medical examination, the reptile is expected to be released back into its natural habitat. No injuries or damage were reported during the incident.

Environmental experts say that urban expansion around lakes and wetlands, coupled with flooding during the monsoon, can occasionally force wildlife such as crocodiles into residential areas.

Rail Services Hit by Waterlogging

Heavy rain also affected railway operations, particularly on the Western Railway network, where waterlogging on tracks disrupted train movement.

Several trains, including the following services, were cancelled due to flooding:

  • Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Vande Bharat Express
  • Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Tejas Express
  • Ahmedabad–Bandra Terminus Karnavati Express
  • Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central AC Double Decker Express

Railway authorities have advised passengers to check the status of their trains through official railway platforms or the 139 helpline before travelling.

IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. Strong winds of 60–70 km/h are also expected in some areas.

The weather department has warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas, traffic congestion, and landslides. According to the forecast, rainfall intensity is likely to reduce from 9 July, with light to moderate showers expected from 12 July onward.
