Haridwar: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has made it clear by giving two big gifts to the sports world in the fifth year of his tenure that Uttarakhand is now not only Devbhoomi but is also making its own identity as a sports land.
Sports University will be built in Haldwani
On the occasion of Sports Day, the state government is going to establish Uttarakhand’s first sports university in Haldwani, the notification of which has already been issued. This university will become the main center of sports education, research and high-level training in the state.
23 new sports academies to be opened in 8 cities
The second big gift of the Chief Minister is the proposal to establish 23 sports academies, which will be opened in 8 cities including Dehradun, Haridwar, Haldwani, where the infrastructure for sports activities was prepared during the 38th National Games.
This move will have two major benefits:
1. Better utilization and maintenance of already built sports complexes.
2. Players will be able to avail high level training facilities in their own district.
Historical performance in National Games
The 38th National Games, held in Uttarakhand in 2024 under the leadership of the Dhami government, firmly placed the state on the sports map.
While only 24 medals were won in the last games held in Goa, this time Uttarakhand won more than 100 medals and secured 7th position in the table.
The event took place on the silver jubilee of the state, which is considered to be one of the biggest sporting achievements of the Dhami government.
In the new sports policy of Uttarakhand implemented in the year 2021, historic steps were taken to encourage players at the international level:
Incentives ranging from ₹1 to ₹2 crore to Olympic medal winners.
Government jobs and scholarships on participation in international and national competitions.
The incentive amount for players was doubled.
Provision of incentive amount even in case of not getting medal.
Message from CM Dhami
The sports environment that has been created in Uttarakhand will be given further heights. Infrastructure and training facilities will be provided in every district to nurture talent. Our aim is to produce a player from every household of Uttarakhand.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttarakhand’s sports policy, infrastructure and organization of competitions have given the state a new sports identity. In the coming times, this policy will become a medium to shape the future of the youth through sports.
