Why is this law necessary? ( law)   

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is preparing to bring a new law to stop fake news and wrong information. The draft of the Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025 has been prepared, which will be presented in the next cabinet meeting. Under this law,   ( law)    those who spread fake news on social media can face up to 7 years in jail and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh or both. According to the draft bill, if a person spreads such false information from inside or outside Karnataka, which harms public health, safety, peace or fairness of elections, then he may have to face 2 to 5 years of imprisonment and fine. There is a provision of 2 years imprisonment for those who help in spreading fake news.

What is fake news and misinformation?

The bill describes misinformation as deliberately or negligently spreading false or misleading information. It does not include opinions, religious sermons, satire, comedy or art, provided the common man does not consider it a fact. At the same time, fake news includes incorrect quotes, tampered with audio-video, or completely fabricated content. The bill talks about completely banning fake news on social media. Also, content that is abusive, obscene, anti-women, or that insults Sanatan symbols and beliefs will also be banned. Apart from this, content spreading superstition will also be banned.

Special court and speedy hearing

To stop fake news, the government will create a Fake News on Social Media Regulatory Authority. The Kannada and Culture, Information and Broadcasting Minister will be the chairperson in this. Apart from this, one member each from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, two representatives from social media platforms, and an IAS officer will be included as secretary. Special courts will be formed to hear violations of the law and a special public prosecutor will be appointed in every court. Every bench of the High Court will also have a special public prosecutor.

Why is this law necessary?

The objective of the bill states that the number of internet users in India is constantly increasing. Currently, 27% of Indians use the internet, and India is the second largest internet user country after China. Social media is very powerful today, but a small fake news can create an uproar in the entire country, so one should not forward any message without knowing the truth. The government says that this law will curb the problem of fake news and stop the misuse of social media.
