Famous (Famou) Malayalam film producer and director Shaji N Karun has passed away. On Monday, April 28, 2025, he was found dead at his residence in Vazhuthacaud, Thiruvananthapuram. He was 73 years old. Shaji N Karun, who was suffering from a serious illness for a long time, was admitted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and was brought to his home in Vazhuthacaud two days ago. Shaji N Karun was recently awarded the JC Daniel Award 2023 at the State Film Awards distribution ceremony. As soon as the news of the death of director Shaji N came out, there is mourning in the South Film Industry. This news has shocked the entire industry as well as his fans. Reason for the death of Shaji N Karun
Born on January 1, 1952 in Kollam, Kerala, Shaji N Karun died of cancer. One of India’s most respected filmmakers, Shaji was known for his work in the industry. He became popular with his first feature film ‘Piravi’ (1988), which won the Camera d’Or – Mention d’Honor at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. Films like ‘Piravi’, ‘Swaham’ (1994) and ‘Vanaprastham’ (1999) directed by him are still loved by the audience. His last rites will be performed at Santhikavadom in Thycaud. He is survived by his wife Anasuya Devaki Warrier and sons Appu and Anil.
Malayalam film producer and director Shaji N Karun has been honoured with several awards by the government, including the National Film Award for Best Director for ‘Piravi’, three National Awards for Best Feature Film (Piravi, Vanaprastham, Kutty Srank) and several Kerala State Film Awards. Beyond filmmaking, Karun played a transformative role in shaping Kerala’s film culture. He was the founding chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, India’s first academy for film and television, and was the executive chairman of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) from 1998 to 2001.
