Lviv: Russian troops have captured nearly 80 percent of Sverodonetsk, a witness to fierce fighting in eastern Ukraine, and destroyed all three bridges leading out of the city, but Ukrainian officials are still trying to rescue the wounded. Huh. A local official gave this information on Tuesday.

Serhei Haidai, governor of the Eastern Luhansk region, said simultaneous evacuation of a large number of people from Sverodonetsk was no longer possible, as the city continued to be shelled and fighting. He said heavy shelling by Russia and the use of the ‘Scorched Earth Method’ (military strategy to destroy everything beneficial to the enemy) pushed Ukrainian troops into the city’s outlying industrial area.

In a phone conversation with the Associated Press, Haidai said that Russian forces have not currently blocked this strategically important city. “There is still an opportunity to evacuate the wounded and to communicate between the Ukrainian military and local residents,” he said.

According to Haidai, the population of Svyrodonetsk before the war was close to a million, but now it is estimated to be around 12,000 people. He said that more than 500 civilians have taken shelter at the Ajot chemical plant, which is being subjected to fierce shelling by Russian forces.

According to Haidai, a total of 70 civilians were safely evacuated from the Luhansk region. Meanwhile, a Russian military official said a humanitarian corridor would be opened on Wednesday for the evacuation of civilians from the Azot chemical plant in Sverodonetsk.

Colonel General Mikhail Mizintsev said civilians evacuated from the Azot chemical plant would be taken to the city of Svetovo, 60 kilometers north, under the control of Russian forces and separatists.
