Islamabad. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Tuesday that “history will not forgive us” if Parliament does not enact a law to curtail the powers of the Chief Justice. Two SC judges questioned the suo motu powers of the top judge of the country.
Addressing a joint session of Parliament, Sharif spoke at length about the dissenting judgment of Supreme Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, which allowed the Chief Justice to take suo motu cognizance and act on any issue. Criticized the unlimited right to constitute benches of choice to hear various cases. His ruling was regarding the matter of Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial taking suo motu cognizance of elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces on 22 February.
On the need for new laws to limit the power of the Chief Justice, Sharif said if the law is not passed, “history will not forgive us.” Meanwhile, Pakistan’s cabinet on Tuesday approved a law. Has approved the draft, in which there is a provision to reduce the discretionary powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
