Anti-corruption organization Transparency International released the Corruption Perceptions Index for the year 2022 on Tuesday. In this latest list of 180 countries, Pakistan is at 140th position. According to the report, there has been no change in the situation as compared to last year. This ranking of this debt-ridden country shows that the leaders have ignored anti-corruption efforts, corruption is rampant on a large scale throughout the region.
Transparency International said on Tuesday that according to its study, most of the world’s countries have failed to fight corruption and 95 percent of the countries have made little or no progress since 2017.
The index measures the perception of public sector corruption according to experts and practitioners. According to the index for the year 2022, Denmark saw the least corruption, while Somalia ranked last in terms of corruption.
Delia Ferreira Rubio, president of Transparency International, said, ‘Corruption has made our world a more dangerous place. As governments collectively fail to make progress against it, they fuel the current escalation in violence and conflict and endanger people everywhere.’ “The only way out is for countries to work hard, root out corruption at all levels to ensure that governments work for all people, not just a few elites,” he said.
The report ranks countries on a scale of zero to 100 from ‘highly corrupt’ to ‘corruption free’. Denmark was seen as the least corrupt this year with a score of 90, followed by Finland and New Zealand, both with the same score of 87. Britain achieved their lowest ever score of 73 with a loss of five points.
Corruption is still rampant in Eastern Europe, as many countries have reached historic lows. Russia was specifically highlighted as a clear example of the impact of corruption on peace and stability. Russia scored 28 points.
“The absence of any checks on the power of Russian President Vladimir Putin has allowed him to go unpunished for his geopolitical ambitions,” the report said. According to the report, Ukraine had scored low before the Russian attack, but there has been a significant improvement. Ukraine got 33 points in the corruption index.
The index ranked 180 countries and territories. Somalia finished at the bottom with 12 points, while South Sudan finished tied with Syria, one ahead of last place, with 13 points.
India ranked 85th in this list, last year also the country was at the same position. However, earlier in the year 2021, India’s ranking improved by one point from 86th to 85th position as compared to the year 2020.
