The Coast Guard, the protector of the Indian sea, is responsible for the security of the maritime border of 46 lakh square kilometers. It is also their responsibility to protect the 20 lakh square kilometer Exclusive Economic Zone. The motto of Coast Guards is – Vayam Raksham – i.e. we protect.
Coast Guards was established on February 1, 1977, when sea smuggling was becoming a challenge to the country’s economy in the 70s. Then the Coast Guard was formed to protect the maritime borders and stop illegal activities taking place there.
Coast Guard helps fishermen
Even today the coast guard keeps a close watch on the beaches. They build a wall in the sea against everything from terrorist activities to drug trade. But the role of the Coast Guard is also of help. They help fishermen and also catch poachers. One of their important roles is in preserving the biodiversity of the ocean.
Coast Guard has 52 ships and 78 aircraft
Coast Guards are the fastest to respond to any kind of threat at sea. The Indian Coast Guard is the fourth largest coast guard force in the world. At present it has 152 ships and 78 aircraft. So far this Coast Guard has saved the lives of 11,516 people. That means every second day of its establishment it has saved the life of one person. The Coast Guard is fully committed to protecting our country’s long coastline and maritime interests. In view of future challenges, their capacity is being continuously increased.
