Shimla: Earthquake tremors were felt late Wednesday night in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. According to the National Center for Seismology, tremors were felt in Lahaul (n Lahaul ) and Spiti at 11:20 pm. The intensity of the earthquake was recorded at 3.3 on the Richter scale. It is a matter of relief that there is no news of any loss of life or property from anywhere. Last month, earthquake tremors were felt in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, when its intensity was measured at 3 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was 5 kilometers below the ground.
Himachal Pradesh comes under earthquake sensitive areas. Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, this hilly state falls in seismic zones 4 and 5. Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul, Kullu and Mandi are very sensitive areas from the point of view of earthquake. In the early morning of April 4, 1905, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake caused widespread devastation in Kangra. In this disaster, more than 1 lakh houses and settlements were destroyed and more than 20 thousand human lives were lost, while more than 53000 cattle were also killed in the earthquake.
The main reason for the occurrence of earthquakes is the collision of tectonic plates inside the earth. There are 7 such plates which keep rotating continuously. The place where these plates collide with each other, a fault line is formed there and the corners of their surface are bent. Because of this pressure builds up and the plates start breaking. The energy that is generated due to the breaking of these plates, finds a way to come out from inside the earth, due to which earthquakes occur. Earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 2.0 on the Richter scale are placed in the micro category and are not physically felt. They can be measured only on the Richter scale. According to experts, 8,000 micro-category earthquakes are recorded daily around the world.
Similarly, earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.0 to 2.9 are kept in the minor category. 1,000 such earthquakes occur daily in different parts of the world. These earthquakes are not even felt. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 to 3.9 on the Richter scale are placed in the Very Light category, which are recorded 49,000 times in a year. They are felt, but their intensity is not so much that there is any loss of life and property. Light category earthquakes are of 4.0 to 4.9 magnitude, which are recorded on the Richter scale about 6,200 times in a year all over the world. These tremors are felt and household items are seen moving due to them. However, even these do not cause much harm. All earthquakes above 6.0 on the Richter scale can be devastating. There is a store.
