Two new tunnels being built in Srinagar-Jammu-Kashmir will ease the way for the tourists and the army. This will also provide a new alternate route from Jammu to Kashmir Valley. It is believed that the construction of these two tunnels being built under the Singhpora-Vayalu Tunnel project will start this year.
The proposed project to maintain all-weather road connectivity is to be completed in five years. The Government has already approved the Detail Project Report (DPR) sent by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL). The last date for international competitive bids for tunnel construction by NHIDCL is 29 September.
Tourists coming from the country and abroad including local people will get benefit from the project. This will improve the economy. Also, from strategic point of view, due to better border connectivity of army and military vehicles, traffic will be faster.

A senior official of the department said that two tube tunnels of 10.363 km length are to be constructed in the Singhpora-Vaylu project. Earlier the tunnel project was proposed to be built in PPP mode, but now it will be built in EPC mode i.e. with government funds.
150 km journey will be easy
There is a possibility of landslides due to rain and snowfall on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Its chances increase manifold during the rainy season. The landslide disrupts the traffic on the national highway. Also road accidents happen. However, this tunnel project will serve as an alternative to the highway. It will connect Kishtwar to Anantnag in Kashmir by road for 12 months.
Vehicles will be able to reach Kashmir easily despite the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway during heavy snowfall during the winter season. The distance between Kishtwar-Anantnag is about 150 kms. This journey will be easy.
