Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) MLA Prakash Goud joined the Congress on Friday, taking the total number of opposition MLAs joining the ruling party to eight. Goud, ( Prakash Goud ) elected from Rajendranagar, was welcomed into the Congress by Chief Minister and Congress state unit president A. Revanth Reddy. There is speculation that more BRS MLAs will join the ruling party in the coming days.
Eight BRS MLAs have already joined the Congress
In the assembly elections held last year, BRS won 39 out of a total of 119 assembly constituencies, while Congress came to power by winning 64 seats. BRS MLA from Secunderabad Cantonment G Lasya Nandita died in a road accident earlier this year. Congress won from there in the recent by-election. With this, the number of Congress MLAs increased to 65.
With the joining of eight BRS MLAs in the Congress, the number of its MLAs increased to 73. Recently, six Legislative Councilors of BRS also joined the ruling Congress. With this, the number of Congress MLAs in the 40-member Legislative Council has increased to 10.
BRS may face more setbacks
Meanwhile, MLA Danam Nagendra claimed on Friday that BRS will be left with only a few MLAs in the coming days. Nagendra was the first BRS MLA to join the Congress. On BRS’ demand to disqualify the MLAs under the anti-defection law, Nagendra said that the party has the right to do so. However, he claimed that BRS will soon lose its strength. BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao had earlier attacked the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over the defection of MLAs and asked him whether this is the way he will protect the Constitution.
