Understand what will be the impact on Pakistan
The Government of India has announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 with immediate effect. India has also issued a formal letter to Pakistan in this regard on Thursday. The letter clarified that the decision to suspend the treaty has been taken by the Government of India after thorough deliberations. The Indus Water Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960. Under the agreement, Pakistan got the water rights of Indus, Jhelum and Chenab and India got the water rights of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. About 80% of Pakistan’s agricultural irrigation depends on the Indus water system. India’s ban on the Indus Water Treaty will create a water crisis in Pakistan and will affect agriculture.
