“A lot has been talked about reforming the United Nations – Zelensky

New York – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday vented his anger at the United Nations. He said that it has been several months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine but so far no solution has been found from the United Nations side. Not only this, Zelensky asked why India, Japan, Brazil and the United Nations are not permanent members of the Security Council. Zelensky said that “the day will surely come when it will be solved.” Ukraine’s president said in his pre-recorded message during the general debate of global leaders at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday: “A lot has been talked about reforming the United Nations. How will all this be resolved? There was no result.”

He said, “A closer look at our peace thread, you will find that it has already been implemented under the real reform of the United Nations. Our formula is universal, and connects the world from the north to the south. It encourages increasing the representation of people in the world who have never been heard.” Why? What is the reason why Japan, Brazil, Turkey, India, Germany or Ukraine are not its members. The day will surely come when this issue will be resolved.”

India has been at the forefront of efforts to push for urgently pending reforms in the Security Council at the United Nations. India itself has asserted that it deserves a place as a permanent member of the Security Council. Currently, the United Nations Security Council consists of five permanent members and 10 non-permanent member states, who are elected by the United Nations General Assembly for two-year terms. The five permanent members are Russia, Britain, China, France and the United States. These countries have the power to veto (withhold) any original proposal. Recently there has been a growing demand to increase the number of permanent members.

Zelensky urged the world community to punish Russia for its invasion, and vowed to take back every part of his country from Russian occupation. Significantly, Russia has decided to increase its action. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday announced a partial deployment of nearly 300,000 reserve troops, following setbacks in nearly seven months of war with Ukraine. At the same time, calling it necessary for the sovereignty of Russia, he alleged that Western countries are trying to destroy his country (Russia).

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said India not being a permanent member of the UN Security Council is not just “not only for us” but also for this global body and reforms “should have been done long ago”. Was asked how long will it take for India to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council? He said that he is working for India to get permanent membership. “When I say I am working on it, it means I am serious about it,” he said on Wednesday.
