Vice Admiral SN Ghormade, Vice Chief of the Navy, on Thursday said the induction of indigenous aircraft carrier INS ‘Vikrant’ into service will help ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Ghormade said INS ‘Vikrant’ will be inducted into the Navy on September 2 at an event in Kochi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the event. 1. Since August 21 last year, INS Vikrant has been tried in different phases at sea. Aviation-related trials are also to be held on this sea vessel of about 45000 tonnes. However, these trials will take place after INS Vikrant is commissioned.
2. India currently has only one aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya. It was produced on the Russian platform. Indian forces want three aircraft carriers. Of these, two Navy fronts will be stationed in the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. While the third will be kept in spare.
3. INS Vikrant is the largest warship built in India. INS Vikrant was named after its predecessor warship, which played a major role in the 1971 war against Pakistan. It is worth noting that during this time Bangladesh became independent. According to the Navy, INS Vikrant is a tribute to our brave soldiers who died in the 1971 war.
4. INS Vikrant has been built at a cost of 20 thousand crores. It has been built in the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau located at Cochin Shipyard Limited. After the construction of this warship, India has joined the select few countries of the world. Let us tell you that so far America, Britain, Russia, China and France are the only countries that have built their own aircraft carriers.
5. Work on this warship is going on for almost a decade. In this regard, the contract has been signed between the Indian Ministry of Defense and Cochin Shipyard Limited in three phases. It started from 2007. The bottom of the ship was built in February 2009.
6. INS Vikrant can accommodate 30 aircraft, including MiG-29 fighter jets and helicopters. This includes advanced light helicopters and light combat aircraft. In the initial phase, it will have MiG fighters and some helicopters.
7. This warship, 262 meters long and 62 meters wide, can accommodate 1600 crew. The total number of compartments built this year will be 2200, in which there will be special cabins for women officers and sellers. It will also have state-of-the-art medical facilities, laboratories, CT scanner, X-ray machine and isolation ward.
8. Significantly, China is increasing its power in the sea very fast. Recently, India’s concerns had also come to the fore after the deployment of a Chinese ship in Sri Lanka. In such a situation, the arrival of INS Vikrant will increase India’s maritime power.
