Deadly attack in the disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan(attack)

Abyei: Abyei Information Minister Bullis Koch said on Monday that armed youths from South Sudan’s Warrap state attacked  (attack) the neighboring Abyei region on Saturday.

More than 50 people, including UN peacekeepers, have been killed in attacks in the area disputed between South Sudan and Sudan. This is the deadliest attack in border dispute-related incidents since 2021, officials said.

Abyei’s Information Minister Boulis Koch said on Monday that armed youths from South Sudan’s Warrap state attacked the neighboring Abyei region on Saturday. Abyei is an oil-rich region jointly administered by South Sudan and Sudan. Both have expressed their claim on this.

52 local people were killed
Koch said 52 locals, including women, children and police officers, were killed during the attacks on Saturday. Apart from this, 64 people were injured. “Due to the prevailing serious security situation, which has created panic, we have imposed curfew,” he said.

Two UN peacekeepers died
United Nations Interim Protection Force Abyei The United Nations said on Sunday that a Ghanaian peacekeeper with the UN force in Abyei was killed when his base in the city of Agok was attacked amid the violence.

A day after the violence, a second Pakistani peacekeeper was killed and four of his colleagues and a civilian were injured while taking civilians from a UN base to a hospital, the United Nations said on Monday. No further details were given in this regard.

Koch said that hundreds of displaced civilians have taken shelter in the UNICEF base. Warrap state Information Minister William Woll said his government would jointly investigate the matter with the Abyei administration.

Ethnic violence common in the area
Incidents of deadly ethnic violence have been common in the region, where the Twik Dinka tribal community of neighboring Warrap state is in a land dispute with the Ngok Dinka of Abyei over the Anit area on the border.
