New Delhi. The matter of the mahapanchayat called against the alleged ‘love jihad’ in Purola, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand has now reached the Supreme Court. A letter petition was filed in the Supreme Court demanding (demand )  a ban on this mahapanchayat convened on June 15.

Professor Apoorvanand of Delhi University and writer Ashok Vajpayee have sent a letter petition to Chief Justice Justice DY Chandrachud, demanding an immediate ban on this big mahapanchayat and compensation for the loss caused to the minorities and ensuring their safety. There will be a demand in the Supreme Court on Wednesday to pass an order on this matter soon.

Let us tell you that on May 26, an attempt was made to kidnap a minor Hindu girl in Purola town of Uttarkashi, which was foiled by the local people. Since then, communal tension has remained in the city. Meanwhile, posters were seen pasted on the shutters of shops belonging to the minority community, threatening them to leave the city immediately. In view of this incident, the police have increased the security system in the city.

Meanwhile, Hinduist organizations here have called for a mahapanchayat on June 15, after which the police department has also come on alert mode. Uttarkashi Superintendent of Police Arpan Yaduvanshi said that a contingent of the Territorial Armed Forces (PAC) has been deployed as a precautionary measure to prevent the situation from worsening further.

Appealing to the people to maintain peace, Yaduvanshi said, ‘In this case the girl was immediately freed and she was handed over to her family. The accused have also been arrested and sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
