After this, four major earthquakes of more than 6.0 magnitude occurred one after the other over the course of several hours on Sunday. In view of the continuous tremors of the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued throughout the Pacific region. Residents on the east coast of Mindanao evacuated buildings, including a hospital.
The US Tsunami Warning System initially predicted waves of up to three meters (10 feet) along parts of the Philippines coast, but later declared there was no tsunami threat. The statement said that based on all available data, the threat of tsunami from the earthquake has now been eliminated. Tsunami waves up to one meter (3.2 feet) high were expected off the southwestern coast of Japan.
