The National Institute of Rock Mechanics, Bengaluru has tested black granite (Shaligram). NIRM is the nodal agency for testing rocks for dams and nuclear power plants in India. Institute director HS Venkatesh has tested the stone using physico-mechanical analysis.

Dr. Venkatesh said, “The entire stone is in one color. It has special properties for any kind of carving. There are no cracks in these stones. The black stone does not absorb water or even react with carbon. It means that anointing the idol of Ramlala with milk, applying roli or sandalwood will not cause any harm.
