Washington A federal appeals court said on Tuesday that Donald Trump ( democracy) cannot be immune from trial for alleged crimes committed during his presidency. The court rejected Trump’s arguments that he should not be prosecuted on charges of federal election irregularities. Let us tell you that Donald Trump is accused of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 elections.
In a unanimous 57-page decision, a panel of three D.C. Circuit judges wrote that the former president must face charges for actions he took while in office. It is noteworthy that this decision can become a big headache for Trump, who is in the race for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election.
The court rejected Trump’s arguments
In their opinion, the judges rejected all of Trump’s arguments regarding the broad legal protections afforded to the presidency. He was clear that the allegations against Trump were serious and that he believed he could be prosecuted.
The panel repeatedly described Trump’s alleged behavior after the 2020 presidential election as unpresidential and an attack on American institutions.
What else did the panel of judges say?
The panel believes Trump was using his power to ‘illegally extend his term as President and displace his duly elected successor’, which would violate ‘generally applicable criminal laws’ .
The panel of judges wrote, ‘Former President Trump’s alleged effort to remain in power despite losing the 2020 election, if proven, would be considered an unprecedented attack on the structure of our government.’
However, the former President still has the opportunity for additional appeal. He can reach the US Supreme Court.
