Delhi: The Indian team suffered a 2-1 defeat in the three-match ODI series against Australia. Team India lost the first two matches of the series, before winning the third ODI by 9 wickets. All eyes were on the performances of Rohit (Rohit ) Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were returning to international cricket after a long absence. While Rohit scored a century in the Sydney ODI, Virat Kohli, after being dismissed for a duck in the first two, also managed to play a brilliant unbeaten inning of 74 runs in the third match. Following this match, Team India’s new ODI captain, Shubman Gill, also made a significant statement about Rohit and Kohli.
Will Rohit and Kohli play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy?
After the conclusion of the ODI series against Australia, Team India’s next series in this format is against South Africa at home in late November. This will be a three-match series, in which Rohit and Kohli will be seen playing. Following this ODI series, Team India will next play New Zealand in January 2026, also at home. Consequently, there is considerable debate about whether Rohit and Kohli will play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which will be held in between.
When Team India’s ODI captain, Shubman Gill, was asked about this in the press conference after the Sydney ODI, he replied, “We haven’t had any such discussions yet. There isn’t much time left for the series against South Africa. There is definitely a slight gap between the South Africa and New Zealand series. After the South Africa series, we will discuss this and decide how to keep the players in shape.”
As a captain, having both of them on the field is a huge relief for me.
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have extensive international cricket experience, and when asked about this after the Sydney ODI, Shubman Gill said, “It’s been very helpful for me, as both Rohit and Kohli have played extensively in Australia and have led them to victory in many matches. As a captain, having both of them on the team is very helpful. Whenever I have any doubts on the field, I can go and ask them anything, which is a huge relief for me.”
