Islamabad: A bomb blast in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, has created an atmosphere of panic across the country. The Sri Lankan team is also deeply frightened. This is why eight players from the Sri Lankan cricket team, who were touring Pakistan, have decided to return home on Thursday, November 12, due to security concerns. This move comes after the horrific Islamabad bombing that killed 12 people and injured many more. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) sources confirmed this information. Due to this incident, the second ODI ( ODI ) scheduled for Thursday in Rawalpindi is in danger of being cancelled. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 6 runs in the first ODI played on November 11.
Triangular series also in danger
After the three-match ODI series, the Sri Lankan team was scheduled to play a triangular series with Pakistan and Zimbabwe. However, the SLC has now stated that new players will be sent to replace the returning players so that the team can participate in future matches. According to sources, the players expressed concerns about their safety and expressed their desire to return, given the proximity of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Recall of the 2009 attack
This incident brings to mind a tragic history in Pakistan. In 2009, terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team bus outside the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Several players, including captain Mahela Jayawardene, Ajantha Mendis, and Chaminda Vaas, were injured in that attack, while several Pakistani security personnel were killed. Following that attack, no foreign team toured Pakistan for almost 10 years, and Pakistan had to host its home matches at neutral venues like the UAE. Interestingly, Sri Lanka’s tour of Pakistan in 2019 was the historic moment that paved the way for the return of international cricket to Pakistan.
Sri Lanka’s tour of Pakistan began on November 11. The second match was scheduled for November 13th, but now an update has emerged that the second ODI has been cancelled due to security concerns. This has once again left Pakistan in a state of embarrassment.
