Chennai:Soaring temperatures across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states (Chennai vegetable prices)have disrupted vegetable supply chains, leading to a noticeable spike in prices in Chennai. Traders report that prolonged dry weather has reduced crop output, tightening availability in key wholesale markets.
At the Koyambedu Wholesale Market, one of Asia’s largest hubs for perishable goods, arrivals dropped to around 300 truckloads on Wednesday, significantly lower than the usual 400. The decline is mainly due to reduced supply from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, which are major contributors to the city’s vegetable demand.
Traders and market experts say the ongoing dry spell in these regions has impacted crop yield and harvesting cycles. As a result, wholesale prices have already started climbing, with retail rates expected to follow the same trend.
Weather conditions remain a key factor influencing the market. While northern parts of Tamil Nadu continue to face intense heat, some southern districts may receive rainfall in the coming days, offering limited relief. However, if dry conditions persist across major producing regions, vegetable prices could increase by another 10% in May.
Consumers in Chennai are already feeling the pinch, with daily kitchen expenses rising due to higher vegetable costs. Market officials warn that unless weather conditions improve soon, supply constraints and price pressure are likely to continue.
